Il serbo ha la meglio su sportivi del calibro di Lionel Messi, Usain Bolt, Stephen Curry, Lewis Hamilton e Jordan Spieth, mentre Serena supera Genzebe Dibaba, Anna Fenninger, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Katie Ledecky e Carli Lloyd.
Per il numero uno del mondo si tratta del terzo Laureus Sportsman of the Year, dopo quelli del 2012 e del 2015. Terza vittoria anche per la statunitense (già premiata nel 2003 e nel 2010), che stabilisce un record tutto nuovo nella categoria Sportswoman of the Year (superata l'atleta Yelena Isinbayeva a 2 vittorie).
Gli Oscar dello sport, uno dei premi più ambiti dagli atleti di tutto il mondo che continua a regalare grandissime soddisfazioni al tennis: 11 edizioni su 17 hanno visto trionfare almeno un tennista. Il recordman è Roger Federer, campione per ben quattro anni di fila dal 2005 al 2008.
